I’ve been studying and experimenting with a variety of herbs and fungi. I found this store downtown, the Tucson Herb Store. Here’s my first entry:

1

I felt the need to start a new page for my journey here in Arizona. Just a few things reblogged so far and I haven’t been able to come up with anything to write about yet. I don’t even know where to begin.

I moved from my home state, New York, in February to live in Arizona with my three best friends. Right now I live here, with my friend Caleb and Kenny. Things are pretty cool now, but given the language of this journey I may not know where I’ll be tomorrow. I’ve learned to be okay with the unknown, and that has been the primary goal of this move. But as for now, the place is sweet. The apartment is right above and around some of the best places in town. Right below is the gym, an art gallery, a yoga studio, and some cafes that I’ve yet to check out.

downtown Tucson

Across and up the street is PLAYGROUND (a really dope bar, lounge, cinema, rooftop venue, and overall awesome place) and there’s The Rialto Theatre, where I can hear every show’s thumps and riffs and echoes from our balcony. Hotel Congress is right next door, and is said to be haunted. One of those ghost hunter shows have filmed here. Funny story, actually. Tucson prides itself on nabbing John Dillinger. I mean… John Herbert Dillinger.

On January 21, 1934, a fire broke out at the Hotel Congress in Tucson where members of the Dillinger gang were staying. Forced to leave their luggage behind, they were rescued through a window and down a fire truck ladder. Charles Makley and Russell Clark tipped a couple of firemen $12 to climb back up and retrieve the luggage, affording the firefighters a good look at several members of Dillinger’s gang. One of them, William Benedict, later recognized Makley, Pierpont, and Ed Shouse while thumbing through a copy of True Detective and informed the police, who tracked Makley’s luggage to a second hideout. Makley was the first to be arrested. Clark was the next one to be arrested at the hideout. To arrest Pierpont, the police staged a routine traffic stop and lured him to the police station, where they took him by surprise and arrested him. Dillinger was the last one to be arrested. They found them in possession of over $25,000 in cash and several automatic weapons. Tucson celebrates the historic arrest with an annual “Dillinger Days” festival, the highlight of which is a reenactment. —Source: Wikipedia.

Dillinger, of course, broke out of jail afterwards (for the umph-teenth time.)

Located in the Southwest United States, in Southern Arizona, Tucson is one of the oldest continually inhabited areas in North America. Hohokam Indians lived and farmed here for 4,000 years before Spanish missionaries and soldiers arrived in the late 1600s. In the 1700s, these “newcomers” established the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson and theMission San Xavier del Bac — the two most iconic and historic structures in the region. ”The Old Pueblo,” as the adobe-walled Tucson Presidio became known, is Tucson’s nickname to this day. —Source

Why Tucson? That’s been the million dollar question for everyone here when they meet me, and back home also. Well here’s one reason: This city has a problem and they know it. They need help.

Perhaps, the biggest sustainability problem in Tucson is potable water supply. Household water use comprises the principal consumption of the water supply, with agriculture a close second. Like golf courses, agricultural lands are turning toward reclaimed water. Mining and other industrial water uses combined accounted for about a 15 percent of water use in 1997. Massive drawing down of groundwater resources over the last 100 years has occurred, visible as ground subsidence in some residential areas.
</sup>

To prevent further loss of groundwater, Tucson has been involved in water conservation and groundwater preservation efforts, shifting away from its reliance on a series of Tucson area wells in favor of conservation, consumption-based pricing for residential and commercial water use, and new wells in the more sustainable Avra Valley aquifer, northwest of the city. An allocation from the Central Arizona Project Aqueduct (CAP), which passes more than 300 mi (480 km) across the desert from the Colorado River, has been incorporated into the city’s water supply, annually providing over 20 million gallons of “recharged” water which is pumped into the ground to replenish water pumped out. Since 2001, CAP water has allowed the city to remove or turn off over 80 wells.
</sup>

Davis-Monthan AFB is locally leading the way with a 3.3 Megawatt (MW) ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) array and a 2.7 MW rooftop-mounted PV array, both of which are located in the Base Housing area. The base will soon have the largest solar-generating capacity in the Defense Department after awarding a contract on September 10, 2010, to SunEdison to construct a 14.5 MW PV field on the northwestern side of the base.
</sup>

Global Solar Energy, which is located at the University of Arizona’s science and technology park, is one of the planet’s largest CIGS solar fields at 750 kilowatts.
</sup>

More than 100 years ago, the Santa Cruz River flowed nearly year-round through Tucson. This supply of water has slowly disappeared, causing Tucson to seek alternative sources.

In 1881, water was pumped from a well on the banks of the Santa Cruz River and flowed by gravity through pipes into the distribution system.
</sup>

Tucson currently draws water from two main sources: Central Arizona Project (CAP) water and groundwater. In 1992, Tucson Water delivered CAP water to some customers that was referred to as being unacceptable due to discoloration, bad odor and flavor, as well as problems it caused some customers’ plumbing and appliances. Tucson’s city water currently consists of CAP water mixed with groundwater.

In an effort to conserve water, Tucson is recharging groundwater supplies by running part of its share of CAP water into various open portions of local rivers to seep into their aquifer. Additional study is scheduled to determine the amount of water that is lost through evaporation from the open areas, especially during the summer. The City of Tucson already provides [reclaimed water] to its inhabitants, but it is only used for “applications such as irrigation, dust control, and industrial uses.” These resources have been in place for more than 27 years, and deliver to over 900 locations. —Source: Wikipedia.

This super old city has been through some tough shit in its lifetime, and I really believe that Arizona will be a pioneer for many things to come.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t plan on ditching New York, but what’s a better place for a soldier fox to explore? I wanted to go West for sure, but I wanted someplace exactly like Tucson. It reminds me a lot of Brooklyn, hah. Real Brooklyn… circa 1985. Literally every resource that I need is all around me, and my new brothers and sisters have welcomed (and trashed) me. And now I face here every challenge that I had previously faced in NY. We will make a difference.
